COLOMBO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Maldivian government is aiming to cut its carbon emissions to 1.52 million tonnes this year, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim said on Monday.
The efforts to enhance the use of renewable energy sources are paving the way to achieving the target of reducing carbon emissions, Ibrahim said during the International Zero Carbon Islands and Green, Low-Carbon Development Conference on Monday.
The state-run PSM News quoted the minister as saying that solar energy systems are being installed across the Maldives, and the government is working to identify additional strategies to reduce harmful emissions.
According to PSM News, the Maldives had an installed renewable energy capacity of 53 megawatts at the beginning of 2024, just 4 percent of the nation's total energy consumption. The government now aims to boost that figure to 33 percent over the next five years. ■
