DAR ES SALAAM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has created eight new constituencies for parliamentary seats in the October 2025 general elections, INEC Chairperson Jacobs Mwambegele announced on Monday.
Mwambegele told a news conference in the national capital of Dodoma that the eight new constituencies bring the total number of constituencies for parliamentary seats in Tanzania to 272.
He noted that of the 272 constituencies, 222 are in Tanzania's mainland and 50 are in Zanzibar. The new constituencies have been created in the regions of Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Simiyu, Geita, and Shinyanga.
Mwambegele added that the creation of the eight new constituencies by the INEC followed applications by the six regions to split large constituencies.
The INEC is currently updating voter registration cards and registering new eligible voters for the general elections to choose councilors, members of parliament, and the president. ■
